May Joy in the Flame
What do you think about scarlet maple?
Sweet maple syrup, or the magnificent fire-red maple forest in Autumn?
We are inspired by maple fruit “samaras” and their exciting message. Red maple is one of the first plants to flower in spring. Small, hanging clusters of bright red male and female flowers appear in early spring, and May is the time that the small, red, and two-winged fruits emerge and ripen.
A ripen samara leaves the mother tree in the wind, the shapes enable the wind to carry it farther than regular seeds. Spinning in the air, going far far away, there is a new adventure!
It’s early summer. We read a poem by R.W. Emerson “May-Day”:
The scarlet maple keys betray
What potent blood hath modest May,
What fiery force the earth renews,
The wealth of forms, the flush of hues;
What joy in rosy waves outpoured
Flows from the heart of Love, the Lord.
May Joy in the Flame
